The annual Censis study on information shows a small decrease in young people's use of social media. Specifically, among 14- to 29-year-olds, the highest inclination to use social media is confirmed in 2025, although there is a decline: 74.8% say they use Instagram (-3.3% compared to the previous year) and 76.9% say they use YouTube (-0.7%), while TikTok is holding up better at 64.5% (up from 64.2%). Young people are quite active on messaging platforms—88.6% on WhatsApp—and multifunctional platforms such as Amazon (50.8%), where other age groups are even more heavily represented. Spotify is popular among young people (49.8%), and the number of video gaming platforms is expanding. In general, 54.8% of Italians say they never feel the need to disconnect from social media, but 38.1% have felt the need to do so by restricting their usage time, deactivating or deleting their accounts, or uninstalling apps (though only 15.3% do so on a regular basis). Among those who have experienced the necessity of a social detox, 25.6% attribute it to the need to reclaim time for themselves and offline activities, 20.6% to excessive distraction from daily activities, 17.8% to a sense of addiction to usage, 17.4% to the need to protect their privacy, 16.7% to social pressure and constant comparison with others, and 14.9% to a negative impact on their mood.
