Victims of the Crans-Montana fire and their families will not have to pay for the medical treatment they received in Swiss hospitals in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. The announcement was made by Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin after a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenia. During the discussion, Meloni secured a political commitment ensuring that the families of Italian victims will not be required to cover any hospital expenses.
Parmelin clarified that the costs will be covered through Switzerland’s victim support system, insofar as they are not already paid by insurance. To avoid confusion or additional distress, Swiss authorities will also stop sending medical bills to the victims’ families.
However, the broader issue of cross-border healthcare billing remains under review. Parmelin noted that the Swiss Federal Council is currently working to identify a fair and sustainable solution.
Meloni welcomed the decision and reiterated Italy’s willingness to maintain close dialogue with Swiss authorities in order to reach a swift and definitive resolution.
