The nephew of Totò Riina, the historic Cosa Nostra boss who built his stronghold in this Sicilian town, has been arrested in Corleone. On orders from the Palermo investigating court, the Carabinieri detained Mario Grizzaffi, 60, whom authorities believe to be the new boss of the local district. Mario Gennaro, 54, and Pietro Maniscalco, 63, were also taken into custody. Three additional suspects remain at large after the judge denied their request for preventative measures. According to the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, Grizzaffi acquired the position of boss from historic personalities such as Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, and he maintains an active criminal network in the territory. The investigations, which took place between 2017 and 2023, describe a still-active "rural mafia" capable of exerting control through intimidation, theft, and the burning of agricultural vehicles. Extortion was also reported, as was a worrying practice in which some farmers supposedly sought "permission" from the clan before purchasing land. According to investigators, this system is similar to the one used by the Corleonesi decades ago to consolidate power.
