Seven out of ten journalists utilize artificial intelligence tools in their everyday job; 76.5% do so independently, without regard for editorial policy, and just 30% claim to be competent with the technology in question. This is the result of an anonymous questionnaire created by Pina Debbi, deputy editor of Tg La7 and a PhD student in Learning Sciences and Digital Technologies, to which 1,370 Italian journalists replied. "Everyone uses AI without saying so, almost as if it were a crime", says the poll author, who was interviewed by the magazine Professione Reporter. "Nonetheless, technology is already integrated into our micro-routines: writing, brainstorming, transcribing, translation, and titling. The question is no more whether to use it, but how to do so in a responsible and transparent manner. In Italy, we are seeing friction between publishers who want to cut costs and unions who want assurances, in addition to a lack of expertise. It is time for them to sit down and create common frameworks: organized AI literacy, clear and actionable norms, public openness, step-by-step traceability, and accountability for signatures and content. The path to take is from individual experimentation to intentional professional posture. However, at the national level, this intention has not been seen".
