Landslides, floods, and hydrogeological instability are all causes of concern for 91% of Italians. Three out of four people believe the risk has worsened in recent years. This isn't an abstract concern; it's a universal recognition that Italy's territory is vulnerable, and that its stability is dependent, at least in part, on people who cultivate it. This is according to the Cia Trend poll "Cultivating Security, Attracting the Future", which was created by the Research Office of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, a trade association representing Italian farmers, smallholders, tenant farmers, and sharecroppers. 89 % of Italians believe that abandonment of agricultural land contributes significantly to the risk of landslides and flooding. Farmers are regarded as crucial to land safety for a variety of reasons, including soil maintenance (58%), active landscape care (54%), and daily monitoring of fragile areas (42%). Over 80% believe that helping farmers entails investing in common security. 55% fully favor it. Among potential younger workers (students, the actively unemployed, and NEETs), the agricultural sector comprises only 9% of occupational preferences. It ranks significantly behind communications and marketing (22%), public administration (21%), and digital (19%). It is almost a second-rate sector in the minds of younger generations. The generational split is also physical: in inland areas, many older people continue to farm since no one is prepared to take over.
