Rome is preparing to welcome some of the biggest names in international athletics for the 46th edition of the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, scheduled for June 4 at the Stadio Olimpico as part of the 2026 Diamond League circuit.
Among the most anticipated Italian athletes are Olympic sprint champion Marcell Jacobs, long jump star Mattia Furlani and triple jumper Andy Diaz. All three attended the official presentation of the event alongside Italian Athletics Federation president Stefano Mei.
A total of 17 Italian athletes are expected to compete across 13 disciplines, including Nadia Battocletti in the 5,000 meters, Lorenzo Simonelli in the 110-meter hurdles, Leonardo Fabbri in the shot put and Elisa Molinarolo in pole vault.
For Jacobs, the meeting carries particular significance. “The Golden Gala has always been a taboo for me,” he said, referring to previous injuries and missed appearances. “My first goal is simply to get on the starting blocks.”
The Olympic champion added that he feels stronger both personally and professionally than in previous years and is eager to perform in front of a home crowd.
FIDAL president Stefano Mei praised the growth of Italian athletics, calling it “a global sport” and highlighting the depth of talent currently representing Italy on the international stage. Mei also revealed that the federation is considering a future role for former long jump champion Fiona May.
