South Tyrol is establishing itself as a national pioneer in computerized voting. Bolzano's Provincial Council unanimously accepted the electoral law reform. This begins a lengthy process that may lead South Tyroleans to exercise their right to vote online. The government's current goal is to be ready for the next election in 2028. With 30 votes in favor, the Council also determined that the right to electronic voting will be extended to all voters, not simply those who live in the capital or abroad (registered with AIRE), as was originally envisaged. However, many difficulties remain to be fixed, including the platform selection. The opinion of the Italian Data Protection Authority on the chosen software will be critical in this case. The measure could reduce abstention and bring polls closer to voters. Turnout in the five regions that held elections last year was less than 50%. The problem is especially prevalent among the Italian-speaking community in South Tyrol, and the ability to vote remotely will assist many people, notably young people.
