On Thursday, May 14, five Italian tourists died while scuba diving in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll. Confirmation comes from the Foreign Ministry, which is following the issue in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Colombo and has made contact with the victims' families to offer consular support. According to an initial reconstruction, which is still being reviewed by local authorities, the divers descended from a safari boat and tried to explore caves located about 50 meters deep, where the deaths reportedly occurred. The exact cause of the tragedy has not yet been identified. The five Italians were reported missing after diving from the "Duke of York Safari" yacht near the island of Alimathaa. The alert was issued at 1:45 p.m. local time, and search operations later led to the discovery of the bodies, all already lifeless. The Maldivian authorities have opened an investigation and have not ruled out any possibilities. On the day of the accident, the area saw terrible weather conditions, including strong winds and a yellow alert from the local weather office.
