A woman in Palermo has been fined after allegedly transforming her Fiat 500L into an illegal school shuttle, transporting children without authorization and in dangerous safety conditions. The incident came to light during a routine police check in the Zen district of Palermo. Officers from the San Lorenzo police station noticed the unusually crowded vehicle and decided to pull it over. What they discovered inside left them stunned: fourteen minors, aged between seven and fourteen, crammed into the small car alongside backpacks filling the trunk. According to police, the children appeared calm and seemingly accustomed to the arrangement. They told officers that the woman regularly drove them home at the request of their parents. Family members later confirmed the account after being called to the police station for identification. Investigators determined that the woman, believed to be in her forties, had been operating the transportation service entirely off the books and without any license or authorization required for passenger transport. Police cited her for multiple traffic violations, including exceeding the maximum number of passengers allowed by the vehicle registration and failing to comply with basic transportation safety regulations for minors. Following the inspection, the children were released to their parents or grandparents. The case has also been referred to Palermo’s juvenile prosecutor’s office, which will evaluate whether further action is necessary. The incident has reignited concerns about unsafe and unauthorized transportation services often arranged informally by families despite the serious risks involved for children.
