Panic erupted in the center of Modena after a 31-year-old man allegedly drove his car at high speed into pedestrians, injuring seven people, four of whom remain in serious condition. The suspect, identified as Salim El Koudri, is of Moroccan origin and lives in Ravarino, near Modena. Authorities say his rampage ended when the vehicle crashed into a shop window in the city center. He then attempted to flee on foot but was chased by bystanders. During the pursuit, he allegedly stabbed one of the men trying to stop him before eventually being restrained.
Prosecutors in Modena have placed the man under arrest on charges including attempted mass killing and aggravated assault involving a weapon. Italy’s anti-terrorism investigators from the Bologna District Anti-Mafia Directorate are also monitoring the case, although authorities say no clear motive has yet emerged. According to investigators, El Koudri had previously received psychiatric treatment. Toxicology tests carried out after his arrest came back negative for alcohol and drugs. During questioning, the suspect exercised his right to remain silent.
The incident has shocked the country and prompted reactions at the highest political level. On Sunday, Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited some of the victims hospitalized in Modena and Bologna, expressing solidarity with the injured and their families. Investigators are continuing to examine both the sequence of events and the motives behind the violent attack.
