On World Communications Day, Pope Leo XIV issued an appeal for communication that is "respectful of human truth", highlighting the dangers of artificial intelligence misuse. During the Regina Caeli prayer from the Apostolic Palace, the Pope urged communicators and information workers to promote the ethical use of new technology. In his message, "Protecting Human Voices and Faces", which was specifically prepared for the occasion, the Pope condemned the perils of deepfakes, digital fraud, cyberbullying, and deceptive chatbots. To confront the issues posed by AI, Leo XIV also authorized the formation of a new Vatican Interdicasterial Commission dedicated specifically to artificial intelligence. The organism will consist of various dicasteries and pontifical academies, with the goal of coordinating studies, projects, and guidelines on the use of technology inside the Holy See and in society.
