A 73-year-old woman was saved at Turin's CTO Hospital after undergoing precise neurosurgery and cranial reconstruction with a personalized 3D prosthesis. The patient had a rare malignant scalp tumor that had gradually penetrated the deep tissues, eventually reaching the skull bone. The woman had undergone surgery for a skin lesion years ago, but the disease had returned multiple times. Recent testing revealed a very aggressive tumor capable of invading the skin, muscles, and skull, as well as reaching key cerebral venous structures. To prevent the tumor's advancement, a multidisciplinary team at Turin's City of Health and Science undertook a complicated operation in which doctors removed a major section of the skull and the affected tissue while also intervening on the dura mater, which had been damaged by the tumor's spread. The most novel aspect of the operation was the rebuilding of the skull with a 3D synthetic prosthetic designed from the patient's CT and MRI data. Plastic doctors took tissue from the woman's thigh and above-the-ear region to complete the surgery. The postoperative course was uneventful: the patient was released with no neurological problems or infections and will now have regular expert check-ups.
