Between 60 and 80% of the pharmaceuticals consumed in Europe are sourced from Asia, and 80 to 90% of the global antibiotic production is concentrated in China. The issue is not solely a health concern; Europe, and Italy in particular, are reliant on Asian supply chains for drug production, which presents a genuine national vulnerability. This warning is included in the document "European Antibiotic Resilience as a National Security Priority", which is promoted by Sandoz SpA. This document underscores the pressing necessity of fortifying European production autonomy in one of the most critical sectors for public health. The fact that the few European producers, who are currently present in Austria, Slovenia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and Hungary, are operating under unsustainable economic conditions, pressured by competition from heavily subsidized overseas competitors, adds to the complexity. “In this context,” the paper states, “Italy should assume a leading role within Europe by recognizing antibiotics as critical national infrastructure and integrating them into the country’s security strategy. Financing production also through defense funds, following the model of the US Defense Production Act. Introducing criteria related to the geographical origin of production in public tenders".
