Every year millions of Italian taxpayers sign to allocate 8 per mille (0.8%) of their taxes to a religious denomination or to the State. This seemingly formal gesture, which is frequently filed at the conclusion of tax forms, earns over a billion euros in revenue and represents the country's social, cultural, and demographic evolution. All taxpayers have till September 30th to make their choice. The percentage of personal income tax is required, even if the taxpayer does not make a choice: the share is given in proportion to the choices made by the taxpayers who signed. According to Treasury figures, more than 1.4 billion euros were distributed in 2025 based on taxpayer preferences, with 16.7 million expressing a preference. The Catholic Church continues to receive the largest percentage, with 69.51% of the signatures totaling about 1.05 billion euros. The amount granted to the state is likewise large, with 24.63% of taxpayers opting for nearly €376 million. School construction definitely leads the list of state-funded projects. The Waldensian Church is next in line with €44.5 million, followed by the Italian Buddhist Union with €16.4 million, or 1.11% of the vote.
