Stellantis has announced the launch of its “E-Car” project, an initiative aimed at developing small, affordable electric vehicles tailored specifically for the European market. The first models are expected to enter production in 2028. The “E” in E-Car stands for European, Emotion, Electric, and Environmental friendliness, reflecting the project’s ambition to combine accessibility, sustainability, and modern urban mobility. The initiative is designed to revive the segment of compact, affordable cars that has significantly contracted in Europe in recent years. According to Stellantis, the project also aligns with broader European industrial and employment goals, with a focus on strengthening local design and manufacturing capabilities while accelerating the adoption of fully electric vehicles for everyday city use. CEO Antonio Filosa said the E-Car initiative builds on Stellantis’ long-standing European heritage in small-car production. He noted that customers are increasingly demanding compact, stylish, and affordable vehicles that are also environmentally friendly, and that Stellantis intends to respond with a new generation of models across multiple brands. Production is expected to take place at Stellantis’ Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy, a site with a strong legacy of producing high-volume compact vehicles, including the Fiat Panda. The choice of location is intended to leverage existing industrial expertise while supporting significant future production volumes. The E-Car models will be based on next-generation battery electric vehicle (BEV) technologies developed with selected partners, with a focus on cost reduction and faster time-to-market. Stellantis said the project aims to reinforce its commitment to “people’s mobility” in Europe, combining affordability, design, and sustainability in a new generation of urban electric cars.
