Rome and New York have formed a new cultural relationship. Rome's Municipio I and the borough of Manhattan have signed the first memorandum of understanding for collaboration between major historic metropolitan centers, ushering in a new age of international dialogue between two great cities. The partnership will engage institutions, museums, archives, libraries, and universities from both areas in a three-year collaborative effort. The goal is to create a network that values culture as a true public infrastructure capable of driving development, inclusivity, and new global linkages. The proposed efforts include creative exchanges, public art projects, and youth programs with the goal of comparing government styles and cultural practices. During the signing of the agreement, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani underlined in a video message the importance of cities as "living historic centers" rather than mere guardians of the past. This message was also expressed by Giulia Silvia Ghia, Municipio I's Councilor for Culture: historic cities must not only preserve, but also create contemporaneity. This concept inspired the collaboration between Rome and Manhattan, two historic cities tasked with serving as a cultural bridge in an increasingly fragmented world.
