The United States has announced the evacuation of 5,000 troops from Germany in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's strongly critical remarks about the US-led war against Iran. In recent days, US President Donald Trump threatened to do the same to Spain and Italy, accusing them of failing to aid him in the Middle East war. Germany has the greatest US military presence in Europe; even with the 5,000 withdrawal, more than 30,000 will remain, distributed among five garrisons. The majority are assigned to the Ramstein air facility, which has been hosting US troops since 1952 and is Europe's largest. According to the most recent figures, as of the end of 2025, 12,662 US troops are permanently stationed in Italy, primarily at facilities in Vicenza, Aviano (in the province of Pordenone), Naples, and Sicily. There are 10,156 in the United Kingdom, divided into three bases and primarily owned by the Air Force, and 3,814 in Spain, owned by both the Navy and the Air Force and stationed near the Strait of Gibraltar.
