As part of Donald Trump's attempt to isolate Cuba and destabilize its economy, the US is urging Italy to cease its healthcare collaboration with the country. However, the issue is not easily resolved. In 2022, the Calabria Region reached an agreement with Cuba to bring approximately 500 doctors to local hospitals, a move praised as "brilliant" for a suffering healthcare system. The purpose was to avoid healthcare facilities from closing owing to personnel shortages in areas such as surgery, pediatrics, intensive care, obstetrics, and cardiology. Today, not only does Calabria benefit from their contribution, but numerous other Italian areas are considering or have already pursued the same route. The most recent pact renewal allows for the admission of up to a thousand doctors from Cuba. There are still worries, as incidences of abandonment continue to increase. Some doctors have gone private, while others have fled Italy. An investigation has revealed concerns regarding wage cuts and withholdings of up to 78% by the Cuban temporary employment service. Calabrian Governor Occhiuto has denied the claims and defended the project. Meanwhile, a cold breeze from Washington is blowing over Cuba-Italy cooperation.
