Italy has launched its first national orchestra made up entirely of university students, introducing a new cultural initiative that combines academic achievement with musical excellence. The project, called UniON – National University Orchestra, brings together young musicians from universities across the country, many of whom study subjects far removed from professional music training. Officially presented on May 25, 2026, the orchestra includes students enrolled in disciplines such as Medicine, Engineering, Law, Physics and Psychology. Selected through nationwide auditions, the ensemble currently features more than 70 musicians who have continued cultivating their passion for music alongside their academic careers. Unlike traditional youth orchestras linked to conservatories, UniON is the first Italian initiative to create a national ensemble exclusively for university students pursuing non-musical degrees. The project was conceived by musician Gianluca Scandola and supported by academic and institutional partners with the aim of proving that artistic practice can successfully coexist with scientific and humanistic studies. Organizers also hope the initiative will help students continue their musical journeys during university years, a period in which many are forced to give up music due to financial, logistical or time constraints. Beyond performance, the orchestra aims to encourage inclusion, cultural exchange and collaboration among students from different regions and backgrounds. UniON’s debut concert will take place on June 3, 2026, at the Teatro Fraschini in Pavia, conducted by Nicolò Jacopo Suppa with violinist Giuseppe Gibboni as soloist. The initiative is already being seen as a potential national model for fostering young artistic talent within the university system.
