The United States has reinstated sanctions against Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, just two weeks after a federal court temporarily blocked the previous measures.
Albanese’s name has once again appeared on the US Treasury Department’s list of “Specially Designated Nationals,” a designation that carries financial restrictions, including limitations on banking transactions and the use of major credit cards.
Last year, the US administration had already barred the Italian official from entering the country and frozen any assets she may hold in the United States. The sanctions stem from Albanese’s outspoken criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as her condemnation of US support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Former Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously accused Albanese of promoting antisemitism and expressing hostility toward the United States, Israel and the West. However, the federal court that suspended the earlier sanctions argued that protecting freedom of speech remains in the public interest.
The renewed move by Washington is likely to fuel further debate over the balance between diplomatic pressure, political criticism and freedom of expression in international institutions.
