FAO and the Polytechnic University of Milan are strengthening their collaboration in digital technologies for agriculture. The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that is dedicated to the development and application of geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) and geospatial information technologies (GeoIT). The ultimate objective is to expedite the sustainable transformation of the agricultural sector and to contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The partnership aims to leverage the FAO's global mandate and the Polytechnic University of Milan's scientific capabilities to improve agricultural planning, land monitoring, and decision-making processes, with a special emphasis on food security, natural resource management, and climate resilience. The Polytechnic University of Milan was founded in 1863 and is Italy's largest public technical-scientific university, as well as a renowned European institution for engineering, architecture and design. "This partnership with the Polytechnic University of Milan highlights FAO's commitment to using sophisticated digital tools to benefit agriculture. By incorporating geospatial information technologies and GeoAI into our work, we can help countries address food security, manage natural resources, and construct resilient agri-food systems. We are laying the groundwork for a smarter, more sustainable future", stated Dejan Jakovljevic, Director and Chief Information Officer of Digital FAO.
