Italian tennis continues to reach new milestones. At Roland Garros 2026, Matteo Arnaldi’s dramatic victory over Frances Tiafoe secured a historic achievement for Italy: for the first time in the Open Era, three Italian men have reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
Joining Arnaldi in the last eight are Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini, capping an outstanding fortnight for Italian tennis on the clay courts of Paris. The accomplishment is particularly significant given the absence of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti from the tournament’s decisive stages, highlighting the depth of talent currently emerging from Italy.
The draw also gives Italy a strong chance of seeing one of its players reach the final. Cobolli, competing in his first Roland Garros quarterfinal, will face fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Meanwhile, Arnaldi and Berrettini are set to meet in an all-Italian quarterfinal, guaranteeing the country at least one semifinalist.
For Arnaldi, it will be a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance, while Berrettini brings valuable experience, having previously reached seven major quarterfinals during his career.
