The Pontifical Gregorian University has formally launched its new department, "Christianity and African Religions and Cultures", which focuses on African spirituality and philosophy. This new department at the Jesuit university aspires to serve as a focal point for bringing African theological and cultural perspectives to the context of worldwide university study. The program is comprehensive and ambitious. One of the courses provided is African theology, which focuses on the comparison of Christianity, traditional faiths, and Islam. This will be supplemented with a seminar on modern Islam in Africa, which will begin with an examination of the Maghreb and progress to Sub-Saharan and Eastern Africa, delving into their differences, diversity, and transformations. A course in African philosophies will be taught alongside courses in Islamic and Indian thinking, providing new views on the themes of ontology and revelation. Yet, this teaching will not be restricted to Roman classrooms. The project includes connections with African Jesuit academic institutions, such as Nairobi's Hekima College.
