In Italy, digital payments are becoming increasingly popular. In 2025, transactions carried out using payment cards reached 12.3 billion, a 13.5% increase compared with 2024, while the total value processed rose from €469 billion to €506.3 billion (+8%). Simultaneously, the utilization of cash continues to decrease: procurement transactions decreased from €1.1 billion to €1.1 billion (-5.5%), and cash withdrawn decreased from €352.2 billion to €340 billion (-3.5%). Contactless payments continued to expand, reaching €8.56 billion (+25.4%), while instant bank transfers climbed by 144.7% in number and 150.1% in value. This is according to a survey from the Unimpresa Research Center, which confirms that debit cards remain the leading payment method for Italians. In 2025, ATM and debit card transactions totalled €7.752 billion, up 15.6% from the previous year and worth €305.6 billion (+9.7%). Credit cards are also expanding, with €1.829 billion in transactions (+6.9%) and €113.1 billion in transactions (+4.2%), while prepaid cards are growing, with €2.803 billion in transactions (+12.5%) and €87.6 billion in transactions (+6.9%). Payment habits are changing as contactless payments become more widely available. Transactions made without entering the card into the terminal climbed from €6.8 billion to €8.5 billion in one year, an increase of more than 1.7 billion transactions.
