The Italian Patent and Trademark Office has released its patent activity report for 2025, confirming the significant growth trend observed in 2024. Patent applications for industrial inventions were 11,996, up 18.2% from the previous year—which had previously seen a 7.4% increase. A particularly encouraging figure concerns the academic world: universities and research institutions filed 594 patent applications, a 25% increase over 2024. This result also reflects the effectiveness of the reform of Article 65 of the Industrial Property Code, which eliminated the so-called "professor privilege", which stated that patent rights arising from university research belonged to the professor or researcher who conducted it, rather than the university or research institution that funded and hosted the work. In terms of incentives, despite budget cuts expected for the three-year period 2026-2028, the UIBM has reaffirmed the reopening of grant programs to promote SMEs by covering patenting and registration expenses. A startup-focused program also remains active, with approximately €3 million in residual funding still available.
