Following the success of the Caravaggio exhibition in 2025, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica host the major exhibition Bernini and the Barberinis at Palazzo Barberini, curated by Andrea Bacchi and Maurizia Cicconi, which runs until June 14, 2026. The exhibition centers on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's unique relationship with Maffeo Barberini, his first and most important patron, who was elected Pope Urban VIII in 1623 and is considered the original builder of the Roman Baroque. The show is also part of the 400th anniversary celebrations for the consecration of the new St. Peter's Basilica (1626), which marks the pinnacle of Baroque art and Bernini's career. International loans include the Louvre, the Vatican Museums, the Getty, the National Gallery of London and Washington, and the Victoria and Albert Museum—an outstanding collection of masterpieces rarely seen together.
