New discoveries are shedding light on the history of Altino, an old Roman city located in the Veneto area, near the Venice lagoon, between Mestre and Treviso. A recent excavation campaign at the Altino Archaeological Park unearthed a substantial piece of the forum, the ancient settlement's political, economic, and social center. This is the first comprehensive research of the city's monumental heart, which began in October 2025 and is being led by the Archaeological Park with financing from the Italian Ministry of Culture and partnership with the University of Padua. The research has already corroborated theories developed nearly twenty years ago through geophysical surveys, ushering in a new era of study at the location. The excavations encompass approximately 26 hectares, which is approximately one-third of the ancient city that was previously unexplored. Initial findings from more than 600 square meters of excavation are helping researchers reconstruct not only Altinum’s period of greatest prosperity but also its phases of decline and abandonment. Three areas of investigation were identified: the southern edge of the forum, where shops and a road separating it from the basilica were discovered; a well-preserved stretch of the Via Annia, an important Roman road connecting Padua to Aquileia; and the area of the main theater, where cavea walls were exposed. These finds give new insight on one of the Veneto region's most important archeological sites, promising further breakthroughs in future study operations.
