A woman held at Perugia-Capanne prison has reportedly become pregnant after a sexual encounter with her partner, also incarcerated, during an authorised visit inside the facility. The case, first reported by Corriere dell’Umbria, has led to the suspension of her sentence, allowing her to leave prison under legal provisions. The Perugia Public Prosecutor’s Office has been informed and has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Sappe prison officers’ union expressed concern, citing “serious organisational and management shortcomings.” According to initial reports, the meeting took place in a standard visiting room and, unusually, was not supervised by a correctional officer. Once the pregnancy was confirmed, the inmate requested and was granted a suspension of her sentence. Regional prison ombudsman Giuseppe Caforio highlighted the legal and ethical complexity of the case, noting that Italy’s prison system still lacks a fully defined framework for conjugal rights in custody, particularly regarding female inmates and the legal implications of pregnancy.
