The government is stepping up its efforts to protect cultural heritage, beginning with Bologna, where porticos and ancient buildings will serve as the first testbed for a new graffiti and vandalism protection system. "We are enhancing the protection of cultural heritage and porticos", stated Undersecretary of Culture Lucia Borgonzoni during a meeting at the Prefecture. The meeting was intended to establish measures to enhance cultural protection and law enforcement against "eco-vandals." The plan is centered around the establishment of a shared database and the structured exchange of information between the Prefecture and the Superintendency. This tool will enable law enforcement to identify all protected assets in real time. The purpose is to speed up and improve the effectiveness of sanction enforcement by providing local governments with rapid operational instruments. Fines for defacement vary from €10,000 to €40,000, while those for damage run from €20,000 to €60,000. The trial will begin in Bologna, which has over 900 listed buildings, ranging from famous porticoes to historic building walls, with the objective of quickly expanding the model countrywide. "We want to share the information and reach the entire region as quickly as possible", Borgonzoni emphasizes.
