Italian television is "invaded" with politics. The big networks—Rai, Mediaset, and La7—currently air roughly 20-25 talk shows that provide information and political analysis, a presence unparalleled in Europe. Political discussion shows are broadcast at all time slots. Along with prime time shows, which have traditionally served as a forum for debate between leaders and analysts, a network of daily programming has formed, with many broadcasting in access prime time and daytime. The end effect is a truly continuous flow of political debate that takes viewers from the morning press review to the big evening talk shows. Overall, Italian television airs 8-10 talk shows in prime time, often in direct competition; and 10-15 programs between daytime and access programming, particularly on news channels. The prevalence of these programs is also influenced by their low cost, which is a critical factor for all publishers. Despite the rise of social media, television remains an important instrument for promoting political leaders. Talk programs remain a valuable forum for direct discussion, interviews, and consensus building. This strategy separates Italy in the European scene, transforming talk shows into not only an information instrument, but also one of the most important forums for shaping public opinion.
