In Italy, practically the whole population (95%) consumes sweets, with around one in every three Italians (31%) doing so at least three or four times per week. This is the result of a poll undertaken by Unione Italiana Food, Italy's leading association directly representing food product categories, with the participation of major confectionery firms. The research was also carried out in connection with Candy Month, a June celebration dedicated to the world of sweets in all their forms and flavors. Sicily (37%), Lombardy (35%), Campania (33%), and Puglia (33%), are among the top consumer regions. The most popular flavor is citrus (44%), which is followed by pungent or balsamic mint (39%) and licorice (36%). Completing the top five are the group of flavors including mint, eucalyptus, and anise (34%), and berry flavors (27%). Candy has a bright future, both in terms of product and process innovation.
