Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has welcomed the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as “an opportunity for peace that must be seized.” In an official statement, Meloni said Italy, together with France, Germany and the United Kingdom, strongly supports the agreement and praised the mediating efforts that made it possible. She offered special thanks to Qatar and Pakistan for their role in facilitating the dialogue. According to the Italian government, any future diplomatic process must be based on two fundamental principles: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Gulf. Meloni also signaled Italy's willingness to contribute to a possible international naval mission aimed at supporting the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes. Any Italian participation, she stressed, would require parliamentary approval. The prime minister also addressed the broader regional situation, calling for an end to hostilities in Lebanon and reaffirming Italy's commitment to supporting Lebanese sovereignty and stability. The statement reflects Italy's broader alignment with European diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and encourage long-term security in one of the world's most volatile regions.
