The G7 meeting in Evian-les-Bains will be a big step forward for Italy and France's security collaboration. For the first time, the Franco-Italian operating Unit, abbreviated Uofi, will be operating. This force, made up of Carabinieri and gendarmes, will work together during large events and border control operations between the two countries. The first operational deployment will include forty soldiers: twenty Italians and twenty French. The French component is made up of members from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur gendarmerie districts, while the Italian component includes Turin's Piedmont Regiment and Genoa's Liguria Battalion. The establishment of the Uofi was officially announced in recent weeks in Rome, in a ceremony attended by the presidents of both police agencies. The purpose is to increase existing collaboration between the two countries' security organizations by strengthening coordination in law enforcement operations and emergency management. The G7 provides a perfect testing ground for this new reality. International events of this significance necessitate more integrated security systems capable of tackling dangers that cross national borders, ranging from terrorism to violent demonstrations to the protection of institutional personalities. Cooperation between the Carabinieri and the Gendarmerie has a long history of mutual partnerships and actions. However, the Uofi intends to take a step further by forming cooperative teams capable of working with shared procedures and training.
