"Remigration," understood as the mass expulsion of foreigners, does not reflect Christian principles. In an address to journalists at Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV stated unequivocally: "Simply saying 'let's send them away and wash our hands of the problem' does not seem to me to be the most Christian response", asking governments not to succumb to slogans and fast fixes. Reflecting on his recent journey to the Canary Islands, the Pope emphasized the importance of addressing the migratory phenomenon, beginning with respect for human dignity and an examination of the core causes that push millions of people to escape. "We often fail to recognize the reasons for these flows", he said, adding that their roots are nearly invariably bloodshed, wars, conflicts, and major social instability. Faced with such a complex reality, Leo XIV rejected simplistic solutions or generalizations that risk degrading people, stating, "We must analyze each instance separately. We must treat people as people", he continued, reinforcing the central theme of his teaching on social responsibility in welcoming others.
