A geopolitical perspective that mixes hope and deep anxiety about global strife. During his first public audience after his apostolic tour to Spain, Pope Leo XIV expressed great joy with the historic agreement achieved between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is set to be signed next Friday. For the Pope, this agreement is "the encouraging result of patient dialogue and negotiation", a diplomatic triumph for which he officially praised the mediation countries. Unfortunately, his thoughts on the situation in Ukraine were different, which the Pope described as a conflict that "continues to widen", leaving a path of innocent victims, killed rescuers, and destroyed historical treasures. Leo XIV sharply criticized the recent bombs on the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the country's spiritual icon. Finally, the Pope addressed migration movements, recalling his recent visit to the Canary Islands and commending the local Church for its efforts to welcome forced migrants from Africa. Citing the thoughts of Robert Francis Prevost, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, the Pope reaffirmed the need for comprehensive and coordinated programs, urging the modern world to rediscover the Gospel through encounter and fraternal interaction between diverse cultures.
