Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a strong message to Chiara Gribaudo, Chair of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Working Conditions in Italy, on the occasion of the presentation of the final report on the Casteldaccia tragedy of May 6, 2024. The document thoroughly examines the dynamics of the catastrophic tragedy that killed five workers while also proposing real solutions to increase safety in tight places. In his speech, the Head of State emphasized a basic principle: "Life is a valuable asset that must be protected at all costs and cannot be exchanged for the ability to perform a job”. Mattarella then underscored the collective tragedy of workplace deaths, which necessitates immediate and consistent action from all parties involved: "The lives lost in Casteldaccia in May two years ago, like all tragic workplace accidents, are a wound for the entire community and serve as a constant reminder, as they have recently, to institutions and social partners of the need to adopt increasingly effective and innovative measures to ensure the safety of every worker, placing particular emphasis on the importance of risk prevention". The President ended his remarks with his condolences and a firm call for shared responsibility: "In renewing the Republic's closeness to the families of the five deceased workers, as well as those of all the other workers affected daily by this scourge, I once again urge institutions and social partners to make every effort to combat workplace accidents".
