Sushi is the indisputable star of Italian cuisine. Sushi Day, observed yearly on June 18th, proves its importance in the country. According to data given by the food delivery business, over 714,000 kilograms of sushi were purchased in Italy in 2025, with an average order costing around €46. Rome, Genoa, and Milan are the most popular cities, with Italy placing among the top European markets for sushi consumption. The social aspect remains important: many people select it for dinners with friends or social gatherings, but individual consumption is also increasing during lunch breaks or as a lighter alternative to the typical Italian dinner. An interesting detail concerns the capital itself, where one of the year's highest orders was recorded in December 2024: 94 sushi servings for more than €340, demonstrating how sushi is increasingly associated with periods of conviviality and sharing. According to other delivery industry polls, Milan alone accounts for over a quarter of national sushi orders, with Rome accounting for nearly a fifth of the total. More than two decades after its widespread adoption in our country, sushi appears to have established its own Italian identity.
