On World Refugee Day, President Sergio Mattarella issued a strong and heartfelt appeal to the international community, describing the flight of millions of people from wars, persecution, and humanitarian crises as "an alarming reality" that occurs in cycles but should not be regarded as an unavoidable fate. "The history of Europe, as well as the post-World War II legal institutions, demonstrate that these impulses may be fought with reason and peace", the Head of State noted. Mattarella underlined that the Italian Constitution specifically recognizes the universality of human rights and the right to asylum for the oppressed, which is translated into practices of responsible reception and aid. Expressing deep solidarity and closeness to refugees, many of whom are minors in extremely vulnerable situations and are frequently exploited by criminal organizations, the President concluded by emphasizing that cooperation between states is the only prerequisite for addressing the structural causes of the phenomenon, and urging all members of the global community to refrain from irresponsible behavior and promote people-to-people solidarity.
