The Polytechnic University of Turin has installed Europe's highest permanent GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) station at the Capanna Regina Margherita, which is 4,556 meters above sea level on the summit of Monte Rosa. This one-of-a-kind infrastructure will allow for continuous data collection in harsh Alpine regions in order to investigate glacier evolution and natural hazards caused by climate change. The installation, managed by the Geomatics division of the DIATI Department's Glacier Lab with assistance from the Department of Architecture and Design, is part of the MOHYCAM research project, which is supported by the Cariplo Foundation and focuses on monitoring Alpine landslides. The station was set up on Signal Ridge, which was deemed the most stable and adequate location for measurements. The new facility's integration with the ARPA Piemonte meteorological station and other observation systems, such as UAV surveys, aerial imagery, and satellite data, will help to improve understanding of environmental dynamics at high altitudes and develop long-term strategies for monitoring and preventing natural hazards.
