Italy is making headway in its digital transformation, with certain industries outperforming the European average. This is underlined in the European Commission's fourth report on the State of the Digital Decade, which tracks member countries' progress toward the 2030 goals outlined in the Strategic Plan for the Digital Decade. The research highlights Italy's success in developing FTTP and 5G fiber networks, digitalizing small and medium-sized businesses, and using sophisticated technologies such as cloud computing and data analytics. The Commission also recognizes Italy's leadership in developing a national governance system for artificial intelligence to implement the European AI Act, as well as the competitiveness of the Italian ecosystem in quantum technologies, which is supported by a specific national strategy. Alessio Butti, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with responsibility for Technological Innovation, stated, "The European Commission's most recent Digital Decade Report confirms that Italy is on the right track and moving forward with determination. Today, our country is among the most advanced in Europe in terms of 5G deployment, fiber optic development, and the digitalization of public services".
