2024 marked a worrying turning point for Italy’s demographics. According to data presented in the INPS Social Report, emigration from Italy peaked in the last ten years, with 141,056 people leaving the country, confirming a gradual decline in the population, primarily involving qualified young people and professionals looking for better opportunities abroad. On the incoming front, migration flows totaled 247,274 immigrants, yielding a largely favorable migration balance (+106,218). However, this contribution is no longer adequate to address the true national emergency: the birth rate crisis. The demographic paradox: despite the fact that more people are entering Italy than departing, the total population is still declining due to a huge natural shortfall between births and deaths. In 2024, the discrepancy between births and deaths was so large that the global population balance contracted by 176,947.
