Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, gave a strong warning to the political class about the use of digital platforms while speaking with the Willmedia Italia platform. According to the Head of State, institutions have yet to build a balanced relationship with new media, as the temptation to use social media as ubiquitous propaganda tools constantly outweighs the possibilities of transforming them into spaces for genuine discourse and debate. Mattarella emphasized how the nature of digital messages, with its limited space, encourages radicalization of positions and assertiveness of political players, at the expense of the ability to listen and mediate. The President continued by highlighting that one-way propaganda is an escape from democratic debate, and that political leaders would benefit greatly from using the internet to listen to citizens' concerns, particularly those of younger generations.
