Nearly half of Italian service workers live in wage poverty. This is the major finding of Filcams CGIL's research "Focus on Poor Work", which maps the income distribution of 6.3 million employed workers in commerce, services, and tourism. The study defines "working poor" as individuals who make an annual wage equal to or less than 60% of the national median, which is €13,950 for those who have worked at least one week and €14,800 for those who have worked for twelve weeks. The tourist sector faces the biggest challenges, with a poverty rate of 71.22% countrywide and 81.14% in the Southern regions and islands. The retail sector has a 31.16% incidence, however there are significant geographical differences, with 22.39% in the Northwest and 48.52% in the South. A significant gender difference arises in services, where the poverty rate affects 57.99% of women and 42.06% of males, with a salary gap of about 16 percentage points.
