With the start of the summer season, travel fraud concerns resurface. According to a Facile.it-commissioned EMG Institute poll, over 4.3 million Italians have fallen victim to a scam or attempted deception while booking their vacations in the last year, resulting in an estimated total economic loss of more than €195 million. The most common fraud involves non-existent accommodations, with 3.4 million people discovering fake vacation rental, hotel, or bed & breakfast listings. While 31% of the targets found the scam before departing, more than a million people discovered it after arriving. According to the survey, 440,000 travelers discovered lodgings that were not as advertised, while approximately 389,000 realized that their accommodations were already occupied. Transportation and ancillary services are also affected by the irregularities, which will impact 2.5 million Italians in the purchase of airline tickets, 2.4 million in vehicle rentals, and 2.3 million in excursion bookings. Young people aged 18 to 24 are the most impacted, accounting for 44.6% of victims compared to a national average of 14%.
