Pompeii introduces augmented reality. Portyl, an app, allows users to tour the city as it was in 79 AD, providing a unique experience that blends scientific rigor, technological innovation, and immersive viewing. The House of the Citharist, one of Pompeii's largest houses and the first to be involved in this digital project, opens to the public and serves as a virtual training ground for future archaeology: a place where research, reconstruction, and storytelling come together to bring an ancient space to life. Visitors to the house, which is famed for the statue of Apollo Citharist (thus the name), can see digitally reproduced rooms, furnishings, and scenes from daily life. However, the experience is not restricted to this building; prominent sights such as the Forum, Amphitheater, Teatro Grande, and Odeion (Small Theater) are also visible in augmented reality, providing an immersive voyage into the heart of the ancient city. Using an iPhone, Android smartphone, or tablet, the Portyl app enables visitors to experience the historic sites as they were during their prime. Visitors can freely explore each site thanks to realistic and historically accurate digital reconstructions, which show not only the architecture but also the people, animals, and events that once filled these spaces. Users can see events from Pompeii's history, such as gladiatorial combats in the Amphitheater, performances in the Teatro Grande and Odeon, and Mount Vesuvius' eruption. Visitors to the House of the Citharist can immerse themselves in the daily life of the domus and its surroundings.
