According to Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, a trade association representing agricultural entrepreneurs, direct farmers, tenant farmers, sharecroppers, and tenant farmers, the 2026 heatwave has the potential to cost Italy's primary industry around €1.5 billion in lost fields and hours of work. Crops, livestock, and production availability are being impacted by high temperatures, water scarcity, and heat stress, which poses a genuine risk of selective price increases for consumers, particularly those who depend on fruit, vegetables, and other sensitive products. According to the organization, the frequency, severity, and duration of extreme events have increased dramatically over the previous half-century, while the agricultural sector already loses nearly 500 billion hours of work each year owing to high temperatures.
