The fugitive life of Domenico Paviglianiti, known as "Don Mico," came to an end in Spain. Considered one of the leading figures of the Paviglianiti clan of the Reggio Calabria ’Ndrangheta, he was arrested by Spain’s National Police in Soria, about 200 kilometres from Madrid, as he was leaving a restaurant. The operation is the outcome of an investigation supervised by the Reggio Calabria DDA and carried out by the Guardia di Finanza's GICO (Special Operations Unit), in collaboration with the Spanish authorities and with the assistance of Interpol's I-Can unit. Paviglianiti had been missing since July 2022, when the Bologna Prosecutor's Office issued a warrant for his arrest on several charges. He faces almost 19 years in prison for mafia association, murder, and weapons offenses. Finance police were able to locate him down by tracking the movements of his network between Italy and Spain, where the boss had been based since the 1990s. His criminal career stretches back to the Second 'Ndrangheta War, when he supported the De Stefanos over the Condellos. Don Mico, who was previously sentenced to life in prison (later reduced to 30 years), has a history of escapes, having been apprehended in Spain in 1996 and 2021. After being released, he disappeared until today's raid. Extradition proceedings will commence soon at the request of Calabrian authorities for his transportation to Italy, where he awaits imprisonment.
