In a major breakthrough, Italian authorities have arrested the alleged perpetrators of the targeted bombing against prominent investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Acting on warrants issued by a preliminary investigations judge (GIP) at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA), the Carabinieri of Rome's Provincial Command arrested four individuals during early morning raids across the provinces of Naples and Avellino. Three suspects have been remanded in custody, while one is under house arrest. The suspects face multiple charges, including the possession and use of explosives, making threats, and aggravated property damage, all with the severe aggravating factor of employing mafia tactics. The attack took place on the night of October 16, 2025, in Pomezia, near Rome, when an explosive device was detonated outside the gates of the Report host's home. The blast destroyed Ranucci's two cars parked on the street and damaged the surrounding perimeter wall. Investigators believe the hit squad was hired for financial compensation by unidentified third parties. These masterminds allegedly provided the suspects with financial backing, burner SIM cards, legal aid, and an escape plan to flee the country. In response, the suspects repeatedly tried to derail the investigation by sweeping for wiretaps and destroying phones.
The highly complex investigation hinged on cross-referencing public and private CCTV footage and analyzing local cell tower data. Forensic teams and bomb squad experts determined that the device used "quarry gelignite", an obsolete but highly destructive explosive that points to an illicit supply network. A crucial piece of evidence came from a highway camera miles away, which flagged a Fiat 500 X rented in Campania. Cell phone tracking later proved that the suspects' phones perfectly matched the vehicle's route both on the night of the attack and during a prior scouting trip. Expressing his gratitude to the investigators, Ranucci stressed the urgency of uncovering the high-level masterminds behind the conspiracy.
