Rome - The Ministry of Health is downplaying the World Health Organization's (WHO) warning about reported heatwave mortality in Italy. According to the international organization, five people died in Italy within 24 hours as a result of the high temperatures. However, official monitoring statistics from the Italian government do not corroborate this reconstruction. Maria Rosaria Campitiello, the head of the Ministry of Health's Prevention Department, reiterated the ministry's position on the sidelines of a Senate session. "We are currently unaware of these deaths", Campitiello abruptly informed ANSA. "As I have repeatedly stated, our data is just-in-time: it is based on actual data communicated to us directly by the municipalities. To date, we have no peaks to report". According to Campitiello, the difference between the Geneva and Rome estimates stems from the differing calculating methodologies utilized. If Italy relies on real-time epidemiological monitoring, the WHO would use new mathematical models. "We act on real data, while the WHO does a statistically projected count", concluded the department head, emphasizing that the situation is regularly reviewed but that there are currently no serious anomalies in mortality.
