A group of University of Pisa students set a Guinness World Record by creating the world's largest paper airplane. The aircraft is the result of ICARUS, a project started by engineering students at the University of Pisa and developed with the assistance of designer and science communicator Jakidale. Hand-built entirely of paper and glue, the airplane has a wingspan of 20.04 meters, is 7 meters long, and flew for 59 meters, breaking the previous world record held by the Braunschweig Institute of Technology since 2013. The record was set on June 25 during the WMF - We Make Future fair at BolognaFiere. "It all started with a few paper airplanes between courses, almost as a joke. We were students who believed that, with the appropriate approach, even a piece of paper could become actual engineering", the young students explained. "Months of study, simulations, blunders, and restarts ensued. Finally, we were able to bring back to Italy a world record that had stood for thirteen years".
